About The Role
VA4U is seeking a skilled and experienced Australian Accountant / Accounting Virtual Assistant to join our growing remote team. This is a challenging role designed for someone who excels in managing the full accounting cycle for Australian businesses—not just bookkeeping. You will take ownership of day-to-day financial operations, ensure compliance with Australian accounting standards and tax regulations, and provide reliable, high-quality accounting support to our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the complete accounting cycle, from transaction processing to financial reporting
- Maintain accurate general ledger accounts and keep all financial records up to date
- Process Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
- Conduct bank, credit card, loan, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Prepare and lodge BAS (Business Activity Statements) and IAS (Instalment Activity Statements)
- Prepare and reconcile GST reports in line with Australian tax regulations
- Process payroll, including leave entitlements, PAYG withholding, superannuation, and complying with Single Touch Payroll (STP) requirements
- Prepare monthly management reports, including Profit & Loss statements, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow reports
- Complete month-end and year-end close procedures, covering journals, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, and reconciliations
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Prepare workpapers and supporting documentation for external accountants and tax agents
- Ensure compliance with Australian accounting standards, tax requirements, and internal controls
- Identify discrepancies, investigate variances, and recommend process improvements
- Communicate professionally with clients, accountants, suppliers, and other stakeholders
- Support ad hoc accounting, finance, and administrative projects as required
Requirements
- At least 3 years of Australian accounting experience within a firm or supporting Australian businesses
- Demonstrated expertise managing the full accounting cycle
- Solid understanding of Australian accounting principles, GST, BAS, IAS, payroll, PAYG, superannuation, and STP compliance
- Advanced user of Xero (preferred), and proficient with MYOB and/or QuickBooks Online
- Experience preparing financial statements and month/year-end reports
- Ability to analyse financial data and resolve discrepancies independently
- Outstanding attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
- Strong organisational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal English
- Able to work independently and juggle multiple priorities
- Available to work during Australian business hours (AEST)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA, CA, or equivalent accounting accreditation is advantageous
- Experience supporting Australian accounting firms or multiple SME clients
- Familiarity with cloud-based accounting, document management software, and payroll platforms
