About The Role

The Clinical Nurse - Vascular Management Team (VMT) is responsible for competently providing safe and effective care to Children, with minimal supervision by the Clinical Nurse Leader, provides specialist support and best practice advice for nurses, healthcare professionals, patients and families in relation to vascular access and management. The Clinical Nurse - Vascular Management Team (VMT) assesses care needs, plans, and implements and evaluates programs of care, and creates and maintains a safe therapeutic clinical environment for all patients who receive intravenous support therapy. The Clinical Nurse - Vascular Management Team (VMT) ensures children get an appropriate vascular device, educates professionals on vein selection and ensures knowledge on escalation processes for difficult access.

The Clinical Nurse - Vascular Management Team (VMT) is professionally accountable to the Chief Nursing Officer.

  • Makes decisions related to the plans of care for children related to vascular access.
  • Assists CNL/VMT Manager in standardizing evidence-based care bundling interventions for vascular access devices (VADs) and ensures Right Patient, Right Line, at the Right Time .
  • Provides best practice advice in clinical settings for all members of the multi professional teams throughout Sidra hospital in relation to vascular access.
  • Assists VMT CNL’s in training Link nurses on IV-line surveillance and audits to measure outcomes.
  • Supports CNL/VMT Manager in engaging frontline staff and VMT champions across the hospital in order to reinforce care bundle and emphasize on consistent implementation of recommended preventative through education and training.
  • P rovides specialist support to nurses, healthcare professionals, allied health professionals, patients and visitors in relation to vascular access and management.
  • Assists CNL/VMT Manager in education and training of staff and promotes awareness of IV related blood stream infections (CLABSI’s).
  • Inserts Peripheral intravenous devices and escalates to Anesthesia when appropriate or failed to insert.
  • Develops knowledge and practice in an area of work regarding Peripheral IV access, placement and central line management. This includes the use of specialist equipment.
  • Provides and supervises ongoing care and education of staff on Peripheral and Central venous lines.
  • Performs comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plans, and implements and evaluates care delivery according to changing health care needs in relation to IV management and access.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with patients, family/ carers and professionals across Sidra hospital.
  • In conjunction with other specialist clinical staff, undertakes monitoring and evaluation of standards of care of patients with IV lines.
  • Works collaboratively with other professionals and community team to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements with IV lines.

Assists in the delivery of a seamless service through Multidisciplinary Team processes and communication.

  • Follows up patients as appropriate and ensures all relevant information is available to enable patients/parents/carers to make an informed choice about their treatment.
  • Assists VMT CNL/Manager in Education of health care professions in relation to IV devices, Competency testing and auditing of IV lines.
  • Contributes to quality improvement around vascular access and management.
  • Organizes own specialist workload and ensures monthly IV audits are carried out in allocated units.

Performs other administrative tasks related to intravascular training as needed and teaches in clinical areas as required.

  • Assists CNL/VMT Manager with bedside education of care and maintenance of Peripheral and central venous lines.
  • Participates in IV-line audit programme to feed into the clinical governance system in Sidra.

Identifies need for, and undertakes research, clinical audit, benchmarking and equipment trials, in order to improve effectiveness of patient care in relation to IV management and access.

  • Provides specialist, expert clinical knowledge to clinical colleagues, patients and carer/ relatives in relation to IV management and access.
  • Informs managers when changes in circumstances occur which affect safe and competent practice.
  • Undertakes clinical supervision of nursing colleagues on an individual or group basis in relation to IV management and access.
  • Encourages others to seek advice and solutions to problems in relation to IV management and access.

Provides support to nursing and non-nursing staff as required.

  • Identifies and communicates with management on challenging behaviors which may create a barrier to optimal IV management.
  • Ensures that resources are utilized effectively and efficiently.
  • Identifies problems with resource use/ availability and makes recommendations for corrective action which are consistent with objectives and organisational policies.
  • Takes responsibility for own professional development and clinical update in conjunction with the unit’s performance appraisal initiative.
  • Acts as a role model to and promotes Vessel Health Preservation.
  • U ndertakes rotations to develop and improve knowledge and skills with defined learning objectives by rotations, namely to interventional radiology, anesthesia and wards or any other areas deemed appropriate by the clinical nurse manager.
  • The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
  • Observes the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Sidra Medicine Hospital together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
  • Observes and maintains strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.

ESSENTIAL

PREFERRED

Education

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing (4 years)
  • Registered Nurse

Post graduate certificate in specialty if applicable in country of origin

Experience

  • 2+ years of recent clinical nursing experience within the relevant specialty from a highly esteemed healthcare institution
  • No minimum experience requirement for University of Calgary Qatar Graduates only
  • Exceptions to the experience requirement may be granted for Qatari nationals (internal and external candidates), with a reduction of up to two (2) years.

Certification and Licensure

Valid professional Nursing license in country of origin
