About The Role

The Vascular/Endovascular/Thoracic Clinical Coordinator serves as an advanced clinical and operational resource with demonstrated expertise in the management of complex vascular, endovascular, and thoracic surgical patients and procedures. The position requires comprehensive knowledge of vascular and cardiothoracic anatomy and physiology, disease processes, surgical techniques, endovascular technologies, specialty-specific equipment, implants, devices, imaging modalities, and the unique perioperative risks associated with these patient populations. Oversees the utilization and availability of resources including supplies, equipment, staff and room’s availability. Is responsible for patient throughput to ensure optimum care of the patient and the productivity of staff and physicians. Actively engages in physician growth and development. Responsible for coordinating tasks associated with equitable on-time delivery of surgical schedule of specialty service. Spending a minimum of 50% of work day in clinical setting.

General Duties

Works with physicians, managers, and staff to improve or design processes that maximize resource utilization of people, supplies, and facilities.
Directs and coordinates daily unit activities to facilitate patient flow.
Participate in initiatives to optimize operating room performance.
Evaluate nursing practice related to plan of care.
Exhibit proficiency in scrubbing and circulating in vascular, endovascular, and thoracic surgeries.
Assist with procurement and maintenance of supplies and equipment. Displays expertise in working in the hybrid room and with robotic thoracic surgery
Supervise the assembling of sterile and non-sterile equipment for surgery.
Is able to assemble special instruments and equipment vascular, endovascular, and thoracic procedures.
Initiates a process that will assure all equipment and supplies are maintained in working order.
Maintain physician preference cards for vascular/endovascular/thoracic surgery.
Appraise operating room for cleanliness, operational efficiency of equipment and electrical appliances, temperature, humidity, and air circulation.
Respond to emergency situations; patient emergencies, hemorrhage, arrest, fire alarm, and disaster.
Perform and delegates nursing actions based on appropriate orders.
Demonstrate critical thinking and accountability.
Demonstrate critical thinking upon review of physician orders, making appropriate referrals, & contacts other health team professionals.

Communication

Communication and Collaboration among internal and external customers.
Physicians, Sales Representatives, etc.
Engage physicians to understand their needs in order to maximize their performance, while balancing the needs of the network.
Engage physicians on interactions with staff to ensure optimum staff performance.
Involve physicians in quality and performance improvement initiatives, capital and operational budgeting.
Target and support new surgeons interested in performing surgery within the Network.
Provide in the moment feedback and coaching to employees and physicians
Provide feedback and recommendations to management on employee performance appraisals and corrective actions.
Routine rounding with staff and physicians with documented results and follow up plan.
Collaborate with Charge Nurse in assigning qualified staff.
Collaborate with CVOR Charge Nurse in assigning staff and facilitating resource use.
Collaborate with other disciplines in the resolution of systems issues.
Collaborate effectively with other users of the Hybrid Room (Cath Lab, IR) to ensure a cohesive working relationship.
Foster effective working relationships among members of the medical staff, nursing staff, and all other disciplines and departments of the hospital.
Represent the hospital in all interactions with consumers, physicians, and the public.
Resolve patient complaints, seek customs feedback and provide appropriate follow-up to the manager.
Collaborate with other departments to achieve continuity of patient care by providing education and support.
Collaborate with Equipment Technician to assess and anticipate limitations of instruments/equipment needs and availability.

Leadership

Demonstrates leadership skills such as the ability to motivate, educate, delegate, and mentor. Serve as primary resource and educator for team members and students.
Serve as primary resource to Charge RN and will assume charge duties in all areas of the Operating Room when necessary.
Serve as a resource to off shifts, weekends, holidays, etc.
Serve as a primary resource for your assigned specialty in respect to equipment.
Be an expert on the use of the Hybrid Room equipment and who to call in the case of an off-hours emergency.
Provide consistent, positive support and reinforcement of management decisions and initiatives.
Monitor and support the quality performance initiatives set by organization.
i.e. – closing countdown, turnovers, etc.
Practice as a professional role model and cultivate a positive work environment.
Identify and trend operational opportunities for improvement for your team.
Monitor competencies and the professional development of staff and work with individuals to achieve optimal functioning.
Identify, establish, and collaborate with key players to ensure physician needs are addressed and met.
Provide input into the evaluation of personnel training in that specialty.
Coordinates with preceptors training of new staff members for all basic specialty cases.
Maintains self-control in high stress situations.
Supervision of subordinates, identifying areas of difficulty and supplying necessary support.
Actively participate in specialty QAPI.
Support Shared Governance and council activities.
Participate in council activities and task forces to improve competencies of self, co-workers, and staff members.
Engage in all staff meetings.
Assess and provide in-service education for staff.
Participate in self and peer review activities to include the positive recognition of peers and staff on a regular basis.
Provide anecdotal documentation that may be sued for the annual performance evaluations, improvement, or disciplinary processes.
May participate in interview process and provide input into hiring decisions.
Assure the delivery of quality patient care through consumer feedback, occurrence reports, product recall follow-ups, implantable monitoring, etc.
Participation in research activities is encouraged.
Participation in community service activities is encouraged.

Productivity

Understand and maintain awareness of fiscal responsibility by utilizing staff, time, equipment, and supplies appropriately according to case volume.
Ensure staff has the training to perform the clinical procedures of the area to maximize patient and physician experience.
Work with department leadership on capital budget, operating budget, staffing budget, and systems and processes to deliver the desired clinical and business results.
Gathers data to assist in budget preparation including justification, budget estimates, cost effectiveness, physician input, and preliminary evaluation, if appropriate.
Determine process improvement and initiatives which will optimize the effectiveness of capital purchases.
Work with Finance and Management to monitor budget compliance and make operational adjustments to ensure budget or performance.
Collaborate with Supply Chain to select equipment and ensure accuracy of supply inventory to provide optimal patient and physician experience.
Manage workload effectively.
Conduct and/or participate in product evaluations.
Maintains a clean and organized work area.

Safety

Maintain a safe environment by assessing environment for safety risks.
Proactively seek out and perform safety initiatives.
Implement measures to prevent contamination and/or transmission of disease to include the use of appropriate protective devices and equipment to prevent injury.
Observe breaks in technique rules and regulations of the O.R. department and reports them to people involved and the O.R. charge RN.
Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures.
Ensure the area is compliant with the requirements of outside regulatory agencies.

EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. All nurses hired after January 2010 must receive their BSN within 5 years of the date of hire. RN’s who were employed at TCH prior to January 2010 and have more than 20 years of experience as an RN are permitted to pursue their BSN on a voluntary basis. An MSN or DNP are not required but superseded the requirement for the BSN.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years in OR as RN with proven clinical competence in vascular/endovascular/thoracic surgeries. Two years of the OR experience must be vascular/endovascular/thoracic.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: The RN demonstrates the knowledge, abilities, and skills to provide age and culturally specific patient care and education. The RN demonstrates the ability to accept and implement change and the ability to work in a culturally diverse setting.

Required: Active RN License in State of Ohio / state of employment, BSN, CNOR or certification in specialty with 1 year of hire, BLS certification

Preferred: Membership in Professional Organization, MSN
