Job Purpose: This role is responsible to perform the safe and efficient operation of the Ash Handling Plant (AHP), including the operation of vacuum pumps, air compressors, ash unloading systems, and evacuation systems. The role involves monitoring equipment performance, executing unloading and loading of ash, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring the smooth transportation of ash. Additionally, the role is also responsible for managing environmental aspects of ash disposal to maintain operational excellence and sustainability in AHP.

Shift Engineer Ash Handling (T1 T2)

Operational Excellence and Maintenance

  • Monitor and ensure safe operations of vacuum pumps, air compressors, ash unloading systems, and evacuation systems.
  • Monitor and maintain critical AHP parameters such as oil pressure, oil levels, and local gauges for optimal equipment performance.
  • Regularly check bearing temperatures of all equipment in ash handling to prevent overheating and equipment failure.
  • Execute the unloading of bottom ash hoppers, economizer hoppers and ESP hoppers and maintain area cleanliness to uphold environmental standards.
  • Execute the loading and dispatching of ash bulkers for external agencies.
  • Monitor proper bagging of ash, as per the site requirement.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance teams for regular cleaning of equipment, instruments, electrical equipment, and local panels to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Monitor Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) field conditions to ensure proper functioning of fields and rapping motors.
  • Coordinate and monitor the respective Maintenance teams for top up of Lube Oil Cells (LOC) as required for equipment lubrication and prevent breakdowns.

Environmental Management and Ash Disposal

  • Manage operations of wet ash and dry ash unloaders to facilitate smooth ash transportation.
  • Ensure proper transport of ash to the ash dyke, adhering to environmental regulations.
  • Utilize heavy vehicles such as earth movers, dozers, and loaders for compacting ash and providing topsoil at the ash dyke, as applicable.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping in the silo, ESP and bottom ash areas to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain log books and log sheets in the Ash Handling Plant (AHP) for accurate record-keeping.
  • Generate Management Information System (MIS) reports regarding AHP activities and performance.
  • Execute safe isolation of Ash Handling Plant (AHP) equipment during emergency situations.
  • Issue Permit to Work (PTW), as applicable.

Business Sustainability

  • Implement and Follow to IMS, AWMS, DISHA, and CHETNA guidelines within the department.
  • Conduct regular safety training and enforce safety protocols to protect personnel and equipment.
  • Ensure samples are sent to the chemistry department in a timely manner for analysis.
  • Promote a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability in ash handling processes.
  • Implement strategies to reduce waste and enhance resource conservation.
  • Provide information and necessary support during regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

Digitization and Automation

  • Execute comprehensive digitization strategies to optimize operational efficiency.
  • Implement automation solutions to support overall organizational goals and strategy.
  • Implement process and system improvements, adopting newer technologies and innovative ideas.

Educational Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

Work Experience (Range of years)

4+ years of experience in power plant operations or similar industrial settings.

Preferred Industry

Power generation, specifically in operations or maintenance of ash handling systems.
