Summary of Position
The Slitting Machine Operator operates the slitting machine at the DCE facility. This role is responsible for slitting continuous lengths of paper rolls to specified widths and packaging finished paper materials on skids according to shipping requirements.
Requirements
Essential Duties
- Monitor the slitting machine while it is running.
- Space rotary blades on the machine shaft according to specified widths.
- Secure blades in position and adjust slitting machine settings as needed.
- Adjust machine speed to support safe and efficient operation.
- Load coated and uncoated paper using a powered hoist.
- Unload coated and uncoated paper using a powered hoist, as required.
- Observe the flow of material through the machine to detect irregular cutting, wrinkles, winding issues, or other quality concerns.
- Clean blades after slitting and maintain a clean work area around the slitter machine.
- Stack finished paper rolls on skids and package materials according to shipping requirements.
- Operate a forklift for loading and unloading, as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of slitting machine operation and basic machine setup including setting up, adjusting and monitoring slitting equipment.
- Knowledge of safe material handling practices, including use of hoists and forklifts.
- Knowledge of basic measurement, roll width specifications, and production tolerances and performing basic calculations.
- Knowledge of quality checks for coated and uncoated paper, including identifying wrinkles, irregular cuts, winding issues, and other defects.
- The ability to safely operate forklifts, hoists, and related material-handling equipment.
- Skill in visually inspecting materials for quality issues.
- Skill in organizing, stacking, and packaging finished rolls according to shipping requirements.
- Knowledge of general housekeeping and workplace safety requirements in a manufacturing environment.
- The ability to communicate clearly with supervisors and team members.
Training and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Ability to perform basic calculations using a calculator.
- Familiarity with measurement tools and units.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Forklift operating experience required.
- Ability to visually detect defects in coated and uncoated paper.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
Physical Requirements
- Climbing – ascending and descending – stool/stairs.
- Stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking.
- Pushing, pulling, using pushcart and/or roll runner
- Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Fingering, grasping and feeling.
- Talking, hearing and repetitive motion.
- Exerting 20-50 pounds of force to move objects, such as paper rolls.
- Required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy and quality of work produced.
- Subject to hazards including noise, a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, and electrical currents.
- Subject to atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system or the skin such as fumes and vapors.
