About The Role
Join ASE Data Services and help build and evolve the databases that power Apple's services at massive scale. We build and run high performance, distributed datastores, relying heavily on open source technologies and contributing back to the projects we depend on. You'll help design and build the next generation of this platform, and support its production health along the way.
## Description
As an engineer on this team, you'll design, build, and ship cutting-edge features for large scale distributed database systems, ranging from client libraries, high performance proxy services to control plane, database core engine. You'll also partner closely with our SRE team to keep the platform healthy, digging into live issues and knowing when to bring in deeper expertise. These components power Apple services at an unprecedented scale for hundreds of millions of users worldwide. ## Minimum qualifications
Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field
4+ years of experience in software engineering
Experience building and operating distributed databases or storage systems at scale
Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals and production experience designing, operating systems with consideration for availability, consistency, durability, performance, and security
Comfortable working through ambiguity and collaborating with operations teams to resolve production issues
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across time zones with a distributed team
## Preferred qualifications
Experience with observability and monitoring for distributed systems
Experience with capacity planning and performance tuning at scale
Familiarity with K8s or similar orchestration platforms for stateful workloads
Open source experience is a plus, whether that's contributing patches, participating in community discussions, or operating open source infrastructure at scale
Strong proficiency in Java, including JVM performance tuning and debugging in production.
Strong proficiency in C, including memory management and debugging in production.
Hands-on experience with Cassandra, Kafka, Solr, or Zookeeper, Redis, Valkey or a comparable system in the same space
Hands-on experience and deep knowledge with data replication, compaction, partitioning
