WHAT YOU’LL DO IN THIS POSITION

Job Summary

The Associate Clerkship Director for Pediatrics ( Outpatient ) supports the Clerkship Director with academic leadership , oversight, and continuous quality improvement for the required Phase 2 clerkship in Pediatrics ( outpat ient portion ) within the BYU School of Medicine ( BYU M ED ). This position works closely and in concert with the Clerkship Director for Pediatrics ( inpatient ) to provide students with a well-coordinated and integrated Pediatric Clerkship experience . This individual ensures the delivery of a Christ-centered, evidence-based clinical learning experience that meets LCME standards, upholds institutional values, and prepares students for compassionate, competent, and spiritually grounded medical practice.

This position has three distinct phases

Phase 1: F rom now t o the matriculation of the first school of medicine clas s, the role will focus on developing clerkship curriculum as a member of the Phase 2 working group. This is expected to require approximately 10 % effort ( 0.1 FTE) and may be compensated on a contracted/stipend basis.

Phase 2: F rom the matriculation of the first class until the start of Phase 2 Clerkships (~14 months) , the focus will shift to recruitment, faculty development, and preparation of all resources needed for the outpatient portion of the pedia tric clerkship . This includes working with our clinical affiliates to develop the training environment s needed to ensure all medical students have a high quality pediatric clerkship experience. It also includes working with the curriculum committee and Phase 2 Director to develop didactic materials , required clinical experiences , and evaluat e and improv e the curriculum. This phase is expected to require approximately 20% effort (0.2 FTE) and will be compensated at the appropriate part-time rate.

Phase 3: Once the students begin the clerkship, the role will focus on running the outpatient portion of the pediatri c clerk ship. This phase is expected to require approximately 40% effort (0.4 FTE) and will be compensated at the appropriate part-tim e r ate.

The Associate Clerkship Director supports the C lerkship D irector with working with clinical affiliated institution leaders and staff , site directors, preceptors, and BYU M ED leadership to ensure consistency , fairness , and excellence across all training environments.

Duties and Expectations

Leadership & Administration

Provide strategic and operational leadership for the outpatient portion of the Pediatrics clerkship across all clinical sites. This position works closely with the clerkship director in Pediatrics to provide a seamless clerkship experience for the students.
Maintain compliance with LCME standards related to clerkship design, supervision, assessment, and student experience.
Assist with annual clerkship review processes and implement continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.
Coordinate with the Clerkship Director for Pediatrics, Associate Dean of Curriculum ( AD C ) , Phase 2 Director , and curriculum committees

Curriculum Design & Oversight

Under the direction of the Curriculum Committee and Cl erkship Director for Pediatrics , d evelop, review, and update clerkship goals, learning objectives , instructional activities, syllabi, and required clinical experiences.
Ensure alignment with BYU M ED competencies, Medical Education Program Objectives ( MEPO s) , and mission-centered outcomes.
Provide clear expectations for students and preceptors.
Assist in the creation of student evaluations for the clerkship.

Student Assessment & Evaluation

Help o versee assessment tools including direct observation, narrative evaluations, workplace-based assessments, OSCEs, and exams.
Ensure fairness, transparency, and reliability in grading.
Provide timely feedback and identify students in difficulty and refer students to the Office of Student Progress.
Participate in remediation efforts and decisions .

Faculty & Preceptor Development

O rient and support preceptors across clerkship sites.
Coordinate ongoing faculty development with the BYU M ED Director of Faculty Development, and other school leaders focused on teaching, assessment, and Christlike mentorship.
Works with the C lerkship D irector and the specialty Associate Chair to recruit, train, and evaluate faculty /preceptors involved in the clerkship teaching.

Site Coordination & Clinical Partnerships

Maintain regular communication with site directors and partners.
Oversee equitable distribution of patient encounters and procedures.
Ensure all sites meet BYU M ED expectations for learning environment and student safety.
Assist with preceptor and site recruitment and retention.

Learning Environment & Student Experience

Promote belonging, clinical excellence, spiritual growth, and professionalism.
Monitor workloads, duty hours, and mistreatment concerns.
Serve as a mentor and primary faculty contact during the specialty rotation

Scholarly & Institutional Contributions

Participate in BYU M ED committees and mission initiatives.

WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS ROLE

Required Degree: MD or DO degree and board certification in Pediatrics . The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Required Qualifications

Eligibility for Utah medical licensure.
Active clinical practice with a BYU MED clinical affiliate within 50 miles of BYU campus .
Commitment to education and mentorship.
Ability to support BYU and Church standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching or clerkship leadership experience.
Experience in curriculum development or faculty development.
Experience in distributed clinical education.
Educational scholarship or QI experience.
