About The Role
Business Director – IRM/MWS
- Location: National
- Division: Specialist Services – Industrial
- Reports to: Divisional Managing Director – Specialist Services
- Internal opportunity: Open to current Biffa employees only. External applications will not be considered.
Role Purpose
- Lead the MWS business strategically, commercially and operationally.
- Own the MWS P&L and deliver revenue, EBITDA and sustainable growth.
- Lead Regional General Managers and wider operational teams to deliver safe, compliant and high-performing operations.
- Drive customer value, service excellence, efficiency and sustainability.
- Build strong relationships across Biffa, particularly with I&C Collections as the key internal collection partner.
- Champion MWS across Specialist Services and the wider Biffa Group.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and deliver the MWS strategy and operating model.
- Own financial performance, forecasting and P&L delivery.
- Drive organic growth, contract expansion and margin improvement.
- Lead operational performance, safety, compliance and continuous improvement.
- Ensure consistent KPIs, governance and service standards nationally.
- Develop strong relationships with I&C Collections and other Biffa functions.
- Support tenders, mobilisations and commercial propositions.
- Identify opportunities for cross-divisional growth and improved customer outcomes.
- Act as senior escalation point for key customers.
- Lead, coach and develop the MWS leadership team.
- Build talent, succession and capability within Biffa.
- Promote a strong safety, customer and performance culture.
Essential Experience
- Current Biffa employee with strong knowledge of the Biffa business and operating environment.
- Significant senior operational leadership experience.
- Proven P&L and financial management experience.
- Experience leading multi-layered, geographically dispersed teams.
- Strong commercial and customer management capability.
- Experience delivering operational improvement and business growth.
- Strong understanding of waste, recycling, logistics or manufacturing-related services.
- Excellent stakeholder management and ability to influence across Biffa.
- Strong understanding of H&S, environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Strategic, commercially focused and data-driven leadership style.
Desirable
- Experience within Specialist Services, I&C or related Biffa operations.
- Experience working across multiple Biffa divisions.
- Manufacturing-sector experience.
- IOSH/NEBOSH or equivalent.
- Experience of transformation or major change programmes.
