In this role, you will provide compliance support to Suncor’s Oilsands Operations, with a primary focus on Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) Operations and Planning (O&P) standards and ISO Rules for Suncor’s electrical power generation and transmission assets, while leading day-to-day sustainment activities, audit readiness, evidence management, and the translation of regulatory requirements into practical business processes and solutions. As Alberta’s reliability framework evolves through the AESO’s ARS Sync-Up initiative and related ISO Rule changes, this role is ideal for someone who brings strong judgment, technical acumen, business insight, and the ability to collaborate effectively across technical, non-technical, and operational teams.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business management, information technology, or a related field; electrical engineering or equivalent technical experience is considered an asset
  • 7 years of relevant experience in the electricity or utility industry, specifically supporting ARS compliance and/or ISO Rules
  • Working knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems, protection systems, AIES operations, and related reliability requirements
  • Experience supporting the implementation of new or revised reliability standards, ISO Rules, regulatory requirements, or compliance programs and associated governance structures
  • Previous experience interacting and/or collaborating with the AESO, MSA, AUC, and/or NERC, including familiarity with the AESO’s Alberta Risk-Based Compliance Monitoring Program and the MSA’s Compliance Process
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and assessing compliance-related events, conducting root cause analysis, and supporting corrective actions, internal controls, audit responses, self-reports, mitigation plans, or similar compliance submissions
  • Strong stakeholder management, non-authoritative leadership, communication, technical writing, time management, and proficiency with tools such as Excel, Word, Power BI, SharePoint, Enablon, ServiceNow, or similar compliance and evidence management systems

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business units, asset owners, and operators to develop and sustain compliance governance, processes, procedures, internal controls, guidance materials, and training that support O&P reliability standards and ISO Rules
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and audit-defensible compliance evidence, and coordinate AESO O&P audits and self-certifications, including evidence collection, validation, and submission through the AESO Portal
  • Prepare self-reports and mitigation plans for submission to the MSA, and support risk assessments, root cause analysis, corrective action planning, and recurrence prevention
  • Provide ISO Rules compliance support to business unit stakeholders by advising on interpretation, applicability, and compliance impacts, and facilitating ongoing stewardship meetings
  • Monitor, assess, and support implementation planning for new or revised ARS O&P requirements and ISO Rule changes, including AESO ARS Sync-Up gap assessments, readiness tracking, and evidence expectations
  • Collaborate with other Electrical Regulatory Compliance team members, including CIP-focused specialists, where O&P, ISO Rule, and cyber/physical security compliance activities intersect
  • Coordinate monthly electrical compliance stewardship reporting, including compliance trends, risks, KPIs, and continuous improvement opportunities

Location and other Key details

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office located in the Suncor Energy Centre (150 – 6th Ave SW).
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Occasional business travel (10-15%)
