About The Role

Do you want to be part of transforming travel across East Sussex?

Imagine playing a key role in a service that is reshaping how thousands of people move around our county. Flexibus - our app based, on demand transport network - is helping residents access work, education, healthcare, and essential services. As demand grows and features and service improvements are rolled out, the need for strong day to day operational leadership has never been more important. That is where you come in.

Flexibus is one of the most ambitious Digital Demand Responsive Transport (DDRT) programmes in the UK. It covers 90% of East Sussex - around 1,500 km² - and gives flexible mobility to communities with limited or no traditional bus services. The service uses real‑time routing technology to match journeys efficiently, supported by a dedicated fleet.

Through app, web and telephone bookings, Flexibus is helping reduce isolation, increase independence, and open up access to essential services, shopping, employment, and social connections.

As demand grows and features and service improvements are rolled out, the need for strong day‑to‑day operational leadership has never been more important. That is where you come in.

As a Senior Transport Officer within our Passenger Transport Team, you will be at the heart of Flexibus operations—ensuring the service runs smoothly, safely, and responsively each day.

Customer service and collaboration is central to this role. You will regularly engage with members of the public often supporting people who rely on Flexibus as an essential service, as well as with our driver operators. This includes responding to routine enquiries as well as resolving complaints or concerns where journeys do not go to plan. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring service performance and supporting continual improvement
  • Supporting customers with bookings, enquiries, and complaints
  • Managing day-to-day operational queries and issue resolution
  • Working with vehicle suppliers and the Fleet Management team to ensure vehicles meet all legal, safety and accessibility standards
  • Collaborating with contractors and partners to maintain service reliability

We welcome applicants who have experience or a strong interest in passenger transport, coordination, service management or fleet operations, along with a commitment to safe driving and passenger safety. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Ability to use own initiative to solve problems, improve processes, and welcome change
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of people in a clear, concise and accurate manner, changing messages and/or style to suit different audiences
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team and be able to develop professional relationships across teams and services to achieve shared aims
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, including the confidence to take control of a difficult situation
