About The Role

Introduction

We are looking for an RF Electronics Engineer to join our world-class multidisciplinary team and help solve complex technical challenges across a wide range of industries.

The role

At Cambridge Consultants, we help our clients develop breakthrough technologies across industries including Energy and Industrial, Defence and Security, Consumer, Telecoms, Healthcare and Biotechnology, and many others.

As an Electronics Engineer with an RF focus, you will work within multidisciplinary project teams to solve challenging technical problems for clients ranging from ambitious start-ups to global organisations and government bodies. You'll take ownership of the electronics elements of projects, contributing both broad electronics expertise and specialist RF knowledge.

We're interested in hearing from engineers at different stages of their careers, from those building on an existing RF specialism through to experienced RF engineers looking to apply their expertise to a wider variety of technical challenges. We'll shape the role around the skills, experience and impact you bring.

We're less concerned with experience of specific software packages than with a strong track record of solving RF and electronics challenges. However, candidates may have experience with tools such as CST, HFSS, Microwave Office, and Altium PCB design, and we'd welcome exposure to any of these areas, even if not all of them.

This role is well suited to engineers who enjoy tackling unfamiliar problems, working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and taking ownership of delivering robust, real-world solutions. As your career develops, you'll have opportunities to deepen your technical expertise, broaden your responsibilities, and contribute to the growth of new client opportunities.

What will you be doing?

Some interesting electronics challenges that we’ve previously solved include

  • Collaborating with LEGO to develop LEGO® SMART Play™
  • Design of a low-power, high-performance smart wearable for Accesso integrating multiple radios
  • Developing a novel air-interface and bespoke communication systems for the Ocado Smart Platform controlling hundreds of robots in grocery distribution centres
  • Developing the Iridium Extreme satellite phone, the first truly-global ‘push-to-talk’ mobile communications system
  • Next-generation Explosive Ordnance Disposal for the British Army
  • High altitude 5G phased array for targeted cellular coverage, with internal data-rates of over 10 Tbps
  • Multiple high-performance custom electronics developments for Defence and Security applications

Every project we undertake is different. We are typically creating something new rather than refining an existing solution, so you can expect a steady stream of technically diverse and intellectually stimulating challenges.

You'll also have access to our extensive in-house facilities, which support every stage of hardware development engineering. These include:

  • Prototype PCB manufacturing facilities, including SMT pick-and-place, vapour-phase reflow and X-ray inspection
  • EMC emissions test facility
  • 5GHz 360° antenna test facility

What can you bring?

We are looking for engineers with commercial electronics experience and a passion for developing innovative technology. We are open to candidates with varying levels of experience and will tailor the role and level accordingly based on the expertise and capability demonstrated during the recruitment process.

This is a client-facing role, so strong communication skills, curiosity, and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams are essential.

Essential technical requirements

  • Strong academic background with an electronics-related undergraduate degree
  • Solid understanding of the fundamentals of electronic circuit design
  • Specialist RF electronics design experience, such as RF LNAs, RF Power Amplifiers and associated circuits
  • Experience of low-noise DC switched-mode power-supply (SMPS) design
  • Hands-on experience of bringing up, debugging and testing hardware designs using equipment such as vector network analysers (VNAs), spectrum analysers and signal generators

Engineers who thrive in this role are comfortable taking ownership of technical work, learning quickly when faced with new challenges, and applying sound engineering judgement to deliver robust solutions in a client-focused environment.

Due to the nature of some of our key projects, you must be eligible for UK security clearance to be considered for this role.
