About The Role

The Car Shop Foreman, provides direction to car shop employees, coordinates repair track and yard inspection priorities, ensures compliance with applicable Transport Canada and AAR standards, supports work order and billing processes, and promotes safe, efficient, and reliable freight car operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of interchange agreements with CPR, CNR, and BNSF.
  • Experience with foreign billing processes.
  • Ability to estimate repair costs and wreck damage, and to create and maintain work orders.
  • Ability to estimate the depreciated value of freight cars.
  • Must have knowledge of AAR standards related to freight car inspection and maintenance, including familiarity with the AAR Field Manual, AAR Office Manual for billing, and applicable AAR manuals of standards and recommended practices.
  • Must have familiarity with Transport Canada Railway Freight Car and Passenger Train Brake Inspection and Safety Rules, Transport Canada Freight Car Inspection and Safety Rules, Transport Canada Reflectorization Rules, Transport Canada Transportation of Dangerous Goods Standard TP14877E, and Federal Railroad Administration Part 249, Chapter II Railway Equipment Rules.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with interchanging railways, mechanical contacts, and customers.
  • Strong operational planning skills, including ensuring cars are spotted on the repair track and assigning inspectors to yard duties.
  • Knowledge of both mechanical rail operations and yard operations.
  • Ability to verify defects identified by yard car inspectors.
  • Mechanical knowledge, preferably in freight car inspection and maintenance; MUST have certification in Transport Canada Rules (required).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Qualifications

  • Minimum grade 12 diploma completion or GED equivalent;
  • Qualified carman;
  • Supervision experience is preferred; and

Must have a valid and clean Class 5, BC Driver’s License.
