JOB SUMMARY

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) assists with patient care under the direction of and RN, MD, PA or NP.

All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age specific needs and cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.

Technical Duties

  • Accurately measures, records, and reports vital signs, including temperature, oxygen saturation, and other assigned patient data.
  • Performs 12-lead EKGs and promptly hand-delivers results to the RN or provider.
  • Performs phlebotomy/laboratory specimen collection in accordance with Nursing Department competency requirements.
  • Under nursing supervision assists applying bedside and portable cardiac monitors.
  • Ensures oxygen tanks are full and ready prior to patient transport.
  • Applies ice packs and orthopedic soft goods as directed.
  • Cleans and disinfects patient care equipment, including gurneys and portable monitors; red tags, and removes malfunctioning equipment for repair.
  • Supports unit operations by answering phones, relaying messages, and communicating with the appropriate members of the care team.

General Patient Care Duties

  • Prepares patients for procedures, assisting with changing into gowns as needed.
  • Assists with the management and documentation of patient belongings, including transport of valuables to Security or Pharmacy per departmental procedures.
  • Provides or assists with personal hygiene and basic patient care needs.
  • Facilitates safe and timely patient transport throughout the perioperative continuum, including transport to preoperative areas, inpatient units, and discharge locations to support patient flow.
  • Transfers patients using proper body mechanics, safe patient handling techniques, and unit equipment.
  • Supports unit readiness by stocking bedside carts, and other patient care supplies as needed.
  • Assists with unit readiness in Pacu and preop bay turnovers and supply management ensure stocking of supplies and equipment organization.

Work Environment

  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Phlebotomy license or certification
  • HS graduate
  • Ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description.
  • Willingness to be taught/learn new skills
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction ).
  • Ability to organize and effectively set priorities.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • Prior experience as a PCA or PCT
  • Current BLS certification
  • EKG Technician Certification
  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred appropriate to the responsibilities of the job .
