About The Role

Honeywell is seeking a dedicated Energy Systems Electrical Engineer to serve as the subject matter expert for the University of Maryland (UMD) NextGen Energy Program Public-Private Partnership (P3). In this role, you will be responsible for all electrical, instrumentation, and control facets of the Energy Systems operations. This position requires strict onsite presence at the UMD College Park campus and is dedicated solely to the NextGen Program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert for all electrical, instrumentation, and control components, equipment, and systems associated with the UMD Energy Systems.
  • Analyze, design, and operate medium voltage electric distribution systems (equal to and greater than 13.8 kV), electric power generation, and industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • Perform power systems modeling, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies using SKM Power*Tools for Windows (PTW).
  • Conduct load flow analysis and evaluate new building tie-in requests and load allocations for campus expansion projects.
  • Optimize and maintain gas, steam, and diesel turbine generator sets.
  • Upgrade, maintain, and troubleshoot variable frequency drives for 13.8 kV and 4160V motors.
  • Upgrade and maintain medium voltage breakers, switchgear, and protection relays.
  • Analyze real-time data through the SCADA/DCS systems to optimize the performance of the central energy plant and distribution network.
  • Maintain systems with strict adherence to the operating budget and contractual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Implement new technologies to replace obsolete systems and support UMD's decarbonization and sustainability goals.
  • Interface with and manage vendors, subcontractors, and third-party engineering firms.
  • Manage capital projects from the design phase to completion, ensuring compliance with UMD design criteria and interconnection standards.
  • Assess job hazards and procedures for the lock-out/tag-out program in coordination with the NextGen Safety Manager.

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License registered in the State of Maryland (or ability to obtain reciprocity).
  • 10+ years of direct experience in the analysis, design, and operation of electrical equipment/systems, including medium voltage electric distribution systems (≥ 13.8 kV), electric power generation, and industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • SKM Power*Tools modeling experience for short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies.
  • Ability to be physically present on campus at UMD at least five (5) days during each standard work week and available at all other times in the event of an Emergency.
  • Dedication solely to the NextGen Program (no Affiliate engineering responsibilities permitted).

WE VALUE

  • 3+ years of SCADA or DCS experience in a central utility plant environment.
  • 3+ years of Combined-Cycle power plant experience.
  • 2+ years of protection relay design, operation, and programming experience.
  • 2+ years of experience with PLC operation and programming.
  • Strong desire to provide customer service and build long-term, successful working relationships with UMD personnel and stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and support campus master planning initiatives.
  • Program management skills and experience managing capital projects.

Individuals who are self-motivated and able to work with little supervision, who consistently take the initiative to get things done.

  • Ability to convey subtle or complex technical messages clearly, as appropriate for the topic and audience.
